Russia-Ukraine Attacks on Grain Ships Raise Fears of Global Food Crisis
Attacks on commercial ships have become a key element of warfare in the Gulf and Black Sea. In the latter, Russia has increased drone attacks on Ukrainian grain shipments. This has disrupted Ukrainian exports through alternative grain transport routes such as the Danube River and NATO’s coastal areas. In response, Ukraine has attacked Russian grain terminals and boats in the Black Sea and Sea of Azov leading to a large loss of export capabilities on both sides. This, along with severe droughts across the globe causing issues for key wheat producing nations could cause food prices to dramatically increase. Countries who rely on imports would be most affected, such as countries across Africa and the Middle East.
